Deputy Mayor of Dresden is to take part in the Forum
Deputy Mayor of Dresden Dirk Hilbert to attend 3rd St.Petersburg International Innovation Forum
This will not be Mr
Hilbert’s first visit to St.Petersburg. Last year Deputy Mayor attended 2nd St.Petersburg
International Innovation forum within the framework of the Russian Innovation
Week, a joint event by the Government of St.Petersburg and Rusnano. Mr Hilbert
also took part in 2nd Russia-Europe Conference for cooperation in
nanoelectronics in June 2010.
Dirk Hilbert, born 1971, graduate of the Dresden University of Technology, where he began his career. Worked at the German Aerospace Centre in Cologne, then in business, and after that joined the Administration of the City of Dresden in 2001.
Dresden is one of the sister-cities of St.Petersburg. Local authorities have defined three prior areas of economic development – microelectronics and IT, nanotechnology and new materials, biotechnology and healthcare.
Microelectronics sector is represented by 1200 companies, with over 4000 employees; ca. 1000 researchers work in the field of nanotechnology and new materials, which is represented by 80 companies and 40 R&D institutions. One of the key players in the biotechnology and medicine sector is GlaxoSmithKline, which has recently been demonstrating interest in business development in St.Petersburg. City authorities have allocated around 125 million Euro for infrastructure improvements and development of industrial areas over the last 15 years. 55% of the employed population of Dresden is involved in high-tech industry.
Large investment projects in innovation development in Dresden:
AMD (microelectronics) – over 12 billion Euros invested;
Fraunhofer Center Nanoelectronic Technologies CNT (nanotechnology) – 290 million Euros invested;
Plastic Logic (microelectronics) – ca. 100 million Euros invested.
